Consolidate It
Two or more pages share the same primary keyword and neither ranks in the top 10. Merge all content into the page with the most backlinks. Set 301 redirects from the deleted URLs to the winner. The consolidated page typically gains 5 to 9 positions within 60 days.
Remove It
The page has zero organic clicks in 12 months, 0 referring domains, and covers a topic with under 100 monthly searches globally. Delete it and return a 410 status code, which tells Google the page is permanently gone. A 410 clears faster from Google's index than a 404.
Match this grid against the data from your SEO content audit. Pages that land in the Remove category first are your fastest wins because they require no content work, only deletion and a status code change.
A page with even 1 referring domain from a site with Domain Rating 40 or above is worth updating before deleting. That backlink passes roughly 15 to 30% of the linking page's authority to your domain. Deleting the page without a 301 redirect loses that equity permanently.
How to Find Low-Value Pages

Cross-reference your Screaming Frog export with your Search Console CSV using a VLOOKUP on the URL column. Action 2: Redirect
A 301 redirect passes approximately 90% of a page's link equity to the destination URL. Use a 301 when the deleted page has 1 or more referring domains, regardless of click count. Even a single backlink from a Domain Rating 30 site passes measurable authority that you should not discard. Point the redirect to the most topically relevant page on your site, not to your homepage.
Redirecting to your homepage is classified as a soft 404 by Google. A soft 404 receives the same treatment as a 404, meaning the redirect equity is lost. Always redirect to a page that covers a related topic.
Action 3: Consolidate

After updating, use Search Console's URL Inspection tool to request indexing. Google typically re-crawls a manually submitted URL within 3 to 7 days. Ranking movement from an update usually becomes visible within 4 to 8 weeks as Google re-evaluates the page against competing URLs.
Check Ahrefs or Semrush for backlink data before deleting any page. A page with 1 referring domain from a site with Domain Rating 50 or above is worth a 301 redirect to preserve that link equity, even if the page has zero organic clicks.
Step-by-Step Pruning Process
A full pruning campaign on a 300-page site takes 15 to 25 hours of work from data export to final sitemap submission. A 500-page site takes 25 to 40 hours. Run the steps in order. Skipping step 6 (setting up redirects before deleting pages) is the most common mistake and causes permanent link equity loss.

Column B: referring domain count (0 points for 0 domains, 1 point for 1 to 2, 2 points for 3 or more). Column C: word count (0 points for under 300 words, 1 point for 300 to 800, 2 points for over 800). Pages scoring 0 to 1 total are deletion candidates. Pages scoring 2 to 3 are consolidation or update candidates.
- Assign one pruning action per page. Delete, redirect, consolidate, or update. Mark each URL in your spreadsheet. No page should be left unassigned. Every URL either stays with a plan or goes with a plan.
- Configure all 301 redirects before deleting anything. Set up redirects in your CMS, your .htaccess file, or your Nginx config. Test each redirect using a browser or curl command to confirm it returns a 301 and lands on the correct destination. A redirect that returns a 302 or a 404 loses all link equity.
- Update internal links before deleting source pages. Every internal link pointing to a page you are about to delete should be updated to point directly to the redirect destination. An internal link passing through a 301 redirect loses roughly 10% of its equity at each hop. Direct links pass 100%.
- Delete pages in batches of 20 to 30 URLs. Process your highest-confidence deletions first (pages scoring 0 with no referring domains). Wait 5 to 7 days between batches and check Search Console for crawl errors after each batch.
- Submit your updated XML sitemap to Search Console. Remove all deleted URLs from your sitemap. Submit the updated sitemap file in Search Console under Sitemaps. Google processes submitted sitemaps faster than it discovers sitemap changes organically.

What Happens After You Prune
Organic clicks on the domain drop in the first 2 to 4 weeks after a pruning campaign. This drop is expected and does not indicate a mistake. The deleted URLs stop producing clicks immediately because they no longer appear in Google's index. The 90-day reading is the first meaningful baseline. If total domain clicks at 90 days exceed the pre-pruning baseline, the campaign worked as intended.
