Content decay is the pattern where a published page loses organic clicks at a rate of 5 to 15 percent per month without any change to the page itself. A single bad month is not enough to confirm decay. Seasonality, algorithm updates, and crawl fluctuations all create short-term noise. A page qualifies for pruning, not a refresh, when it meets 2 or more of these conditions:

- A stronger page on the same site already covers the same topic and ranks in the top 10

Content pruning means either redirecting the URL to the most relevant existing page with a 301 redirect, or removing it and letting it return a 404.
