Rank Tracking Still Matters in the AI Search Era
With AI Overviews, answer engines, and zero-click results reshaping the SERP, some marketers have declared rank tracking obsolete. The data says otherwise. Organic position remains the strongest single predictor of search-driven revenue, because the classic blue links still capture the majority of commercial-intent clicks and because AI systems themselves lean heavily on top-ranking pages when selecting sources to cite. A page that ranks in the top three for its target query is dramatically more likely to be quoted in AI Overviews and LLM answers than one buried on page two.
What has changed is how rankings should be interpreted. A position number without SERP context is misleading: ranking third below an AI Overview, a shopping carousel, and a People Also Ask block is a very different reality from ranking third at the top of a clean SERP. That is why this tool reports your position alongside the count of SERP features present, so you can judge not only where you rank but how much visible real estate that rank actually buys you.
Why Rankings Change by Location and Device
Google does not serve one global ranking. Every SERP is computed for a specific market, and the same keyword can return substantially different results in the United States, the United Kingdom, and India. Local link profiles, country-code domains, language nuances, regional search behavior, and datacenter-level index differences all shift positions between markets. If your business serves multiple countries, tracking a single location gives you a false picture, a site ranking fourth in the US may be entirely absent from the Australian top 10 for the identical query.
Device matters just as much. Google's mobile-first index means mobile rankings are the primary signal for most sites, yet desktop SERPs often differ because of layout constraints, feature eligibility, and page experience factors that weigh differently on small screens. Slow mobile pages, intrusive interstitials, and poor responsive design can drag a page down on mobile while it holds firm on desktop. Checking both devices per market, and doing so on a consistent schedule, turns raw position numbers into a trend line you can actually act on.
